1:  I Risk - therefore I am! - seen on an enormous sign in the Chicago airport.

It got me thinking!  Does the word "risk" get your belly doing cartwheels?   Or your chest tightening?   I suppose the opposite of risk would be playing safe.   Feeling better, yet?   There is something deliciously comfortable about playing safe - living life in a predictable, dependable and very stable way.  It avoids shocks or big surprises, offers security to those around you and allows for long term planning.   For some people this means safety and happiness.   Now, I don't wish to burst anyone's bubble.   If this works - fantastic.   And while there are many folks whose lives fit this description there are others who live this way with a nagging feeling that something is missing!  Here's what might be extremely limited or missing altogether:  growth, excitement, variety, opportunity, change, creativity...  to name a few.

Avoiding risk is usually prompted by fear of failure.   Without failure, there's very little learning.  "Safe" is not always what it's cracked up to be.

2:  Believe it or not!  ME - encouraging YOU to eat fat!

If you consume about 70 calories of healthy (unsaturated) fat at the beginning of a meal, you're likely to eat less!  The fat stimulates the production of hormones (leptin and then cholecystokinin) that tricks your brain in several ways.   First off, the brain thinks you're full.   Secondly, it slows the emptying of your stomach so you'll be likely to eat less and enjoy more!

Here's what approximately 70 calories of unsaturated fat can look like:  
  • 6 whole walnuts
  • 12 almonds
  • 22 pistachios
  • 20 peanuts
  • small slice of multigrain bread dipped in 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil
  • about 10 olives packed in water
  • 1/4 avocado (also contains about 20 vitamins!)
But beware:  the flip side of this is what happens when you eat saturated fats (like a cheeseburger, butter, coconut oil etc.) The effect will be the opposite!   The production of the hormones mentioned above will be minimized, thus your appetite will be in full gear and you'll only stop eating when you're totally physically stuffed.

3:  Do you love yourself enough...?

Not loving yourself enough holds you back from being the best you can be!   You likely already know that and yet you're still very hard on yourself!   There's some irony here when you think about how some women regard their extra weight:   they deny themselves full self-love because they're so unhappy with their physical image.   And the self criticism provides all kinds of excuses to prioritize everything before themselves - whether it's their energy, their time or their money.  

Self-love and raising self esteem are two of the most important among the many topics covered in the 12 Week Weight Loss Group Teleclass.   Naturally, we discuss food and exercise but more important is the connection and support among participants along with the exploration of behaviours that lead to being overweight.   Groups are small.   Calls are filled with sharing, discussion and some coaching.   And yes, there's a bit of homework and more sharing between calls.

4:  Speaking globally.

I've just returned from 5 days in the Chicago area - first at a leadership reunion and then playing in the windy city.   WOW!  There are so many remarkable aspects of this great city - amazing architecture, vibrancy, and an incredible abundance of activity, restaurants, entertainment and the list goes on.   But for me, most impressive was the display of globes promoting the better care of our environment and the part that each of us can play in saving the planet.   The project was created by Cool Globes, a not-for-profit organization.   Their tagline is:  Hot ideas for a Cooler Planet.   Each globe is an original work of art with a real and practical suggestion of how you can combat global warming.   Viewing them was entertaining, sobering and above all, inspiring!  If you'd like to check them out visit www.coolglobes.org

Until now, I've been your run-of-the-mill recycler and conservationist; now I will do more.   Here are a few tips that are not very hard to live with and will make a significant difference if more people will take on even one.  See if any appeal to you!  
  1. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.  
  2. Vote for politicians who clearly indicate a willingness to address solutions for global warming.  
  3. Tune into and purchase items (like toilet paper) made from recycled products.  
  4. Make sure that all organizations with which you're associated recycle - seriously.  
  5. Educate a child about the 3 r's - reduce, reuse, recycle - and put it into practice yourself!
The globes go on auction on Oct.  5.   It looks like you need to be in Chicago in order to bid on one.   Need a vacation this week or next?   Proceeds benefit environmental education in conjunction with the Chicago Conservation Clubs and The Field Museum.
